The "Lousã" tour offers an unforgettable journey through the village that gives its name to this route. On
this tour, you’ll explore the magnificent Lousã Castle, the charming schist villages, and reach the highest
point of the Lousã mountain range, all while experiencing the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the
region.
1. Castelo da Lousã
Built in the 11th century, this medieval castle played a crucial strategic role in
defending the region. Its sturdy walls and imposing keep stand as silent witnesses
to the battles and stories that shaped Portugal's history. While exploring the castle,
you can admire its medieval architecture and learn about the lives of the knights
and lords who once lived there.
Near the castle, you can also visit the Ermidas da Nossa Senhora da Piedade, small
chapels dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Piedade. These chapels, built between the
17th and 19th centuries, reflect the region’s religious devotion and cultural history.
Erected by local communities in honor of the Virgin Mary, they offer a glimpse into
the area's spiritual and historical heritage.
2. Aldeia de Xisto do Candal
The aldeia de xisto do Candal is renowned for its schist houses, a local material that
gives the buildings a pale color and a rustic texture that blends harmoniously with
the natural landscape. The narrow, winding streets of the village are lined with fairy-
tale-like buildings, featuring slate roofs and stone facades that stand the test of time
and weather.
In this charming village, you will find a shop offering typical regional products, as
well as a restaurant where you can have traditional local dishes, such as chanfana.
3. Baloiço do Trevim
Situated at 1,200 meters above sea level, this giant wooden swing is the highest
point in the Serra da Lousã. Its elevation provides the most breathtaking panoramic
view of the Lousã region.
4. Aldeia de Xisto do Talasnal
Among the 12 schist villages in the Serra da Lousã, Talasnal stands out for its charm
and the prominence it has brought to the network of schist villages.
